Meet Jack O'Lantern

Halloween Pumpkin, Atlanta, Georgia, USA
The stem on this pumpkin was so big and interesting that we made this sideways Jack O'Lantern.

Can You Hear Winthrop Sing?

Priority Mail Box, Atlanta, Georgia, USA
In the Music Man, little Winthrop and the whole town sang excitedly about the Wells Fargo Wagon bringing packages from far away.  The mail now comes in a blue truck, but it's still exciting to get a big package, even when it's just water filters for the kitchen sink.

Sweet, Shiny, and Delicious

Krispy Kreme Doughuts, Atlanta, Georgia, USA
Krispy Kreme doughnuts are a Southern delight.  Hot and fresh Krispy Kreme's smell so good and it is exciting to see the doughnuts being fried and glazed right before arriving in our box!  These are so delicious that you can't stop at just one.

We once brought a dozen with us on an El Al flight to Israel for a friend.  It's a good thing our Krispy Kreme store is certified Kosher!  Our friend was so excited that he invited his whole family over to delight in these American doughnuts!

Dusky Gradient

Water Tower, Hoschton, Georgia, USA
We love this picture for the shape of the water tower, the ladder tube, and especially the perfect gradient of the sky at dusk.

A Line in the Sand

Subdivisions, Metropolitan Phoenix, Arizona, USA
This abrupt change from subdivisions to desert is like a line in the sand.

Strength and Beauty

Eiffel Tower,  Paris, France
This exquisite structure is a triumph of architecture and good taste.  We loved seeing it from afar and up close.  Seeing it lit up by the late summer sun and then ascending it at dusk was a treat.  The tower is simply beautiful and worth visiting.

Groovy

Mushroom, Atlanta, Georgia, USA
We found this mushroom just growing in wood chips and fallen leaves.  If we ate it, perhaps the world would look as distorted and curvy as it does!

A Colorful Buffet

Hotel Breakfast, Eilat, Israel
When we travel, we like to indulge in the local foods.  Like the USA, Israel is a melting pot of many different cultures and cuisines.  This breakfast was a small sampling of the offerings at the Dan Panorama's breakfast smörgåsbord.  It was all delicious!

Turning Music into Gold

Phonograph, Atlanta, Georgia, USA
We still listen to vinyl records from time to time.  In this photo is John Stewart's RSO LP Bombs Away Dream Babies which contains his hit Gold.

New Mexican

Sea Bass, Chayote, and Salad, Atlanta, Georgia, USA
We enjoyed this delicious and beautiful meal at Alma Cocina in Atlanta.  Alma Cocina cooks up gourmet Mexican cuisine.  This outstanding dish was called Corvina Sea Bass Mole Amarillo.

Living Outside the Box

One Jackson Square, New York, New York, USA
The facade of One Jackson Square is amazing.  Not only we were surprised by the design of this cool building, but also that it is a residential complex.  We thought for sure it was an office building.

We took this picture in a hurry with our phone from a car, hence the black corner.  While we could have cropped this out, we decided to leave it in as it somehow made sense given the shape of the building.

It Only Looks Like Mars

Mountains and Desert, Nevada, USA
It may look like Mars, but this is actually central Nevada!

World's Largest Pizza

World's Largest Pizza, Havana, Florida, USA
Back in October 1991, we traveled to the tiny town of Havana, Florida to see and eat from the world's largest pizza (at that time).  For the cost of $2 a slice, we were a part of history!

Tallahassee restaurateur Lorenzo Amato aimed to regain the record for "The World's Largest Pizza" for the USA with this massive rectangular pizza.  It was the biggest, but given its size and the long preparation and cooking times, it was far from the best.  Luckily, no one expected it to be gourmet!

A Spring Reminder

Dogwood Flowers, Atlanta, Georgia, USA
Leaves are falling and Fall is officially underway.  Here was the scene in the early weeks of Spring when the trees were filling with leaves and flowers.

Ready for Next Year

Lake Beach, Fort Yargo State Park, Winder, Georgia, USA
The days are getting shorter and cooler, but it's not too early to be thinking about places near and far to visit next year.  If you have kids, this lakeside "beach" in Fort Yargo State Park might be for you.

An Afternoon Pick-Me-Up

We spotted these construction workers taking a break one afternoon in downtown Atlanta.  When you're tired, you rest where you can.

Discovering Columbus

Columbus Monument, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania
Today marks the 521st anniversary of Christopher Columbus' landing in the 'New World'.

The Columbus Monument was erected in 1992 to commemorate the 500th anniversary of his arrival in the Americas.

With all the new thoughts about the aftermath of Columbus, some might wonder why in the birthplace of the most freedom-loving nation on earth there is a monument to a man who inflicted tyranny on native peoples.

Whatever the truth was about Columbus, we leave it to each person to decide.

Don't Blow It

Warning Sign, Maho Beach, Sint Maarten
This warning sign is posted on Maho Beach, which sits at the end of the sole runway for Princess Juliana International Airport (SXM).

Princess Juliana is internationally known as a terrific place for plane-spotting and for getting really close to arriving and departing aircraft.  Some people get a little too close and get blown into the rocky ocean beyond the runway.

Aux Champs-Élysées

Avenue des Champs-Élysées, Paris, France
From atop the Arc de Triomphe, we took this photo of the famous Avenue des Champs-Élysées back in the late 1990s.  The avenue is historic and has played host to historic events, but it continues to be famous for its ritzy shops, grandeur, and beauty.

U.L.O.

Ceiling Lamp, Atlanta, Georgia, USA
We saw this cool lamp at the World of Coca Cola in Atlanta.  As it resembles a UFO, we decided to title this post U.L.O. (Unidentified Lighted Object).

You Won't Cry Over this Tart

Onion Tart, Pine Mountain, Georgia, USA
This onion tart was delicious and made from fresh ingredients harvested at Callaway Gardens.

Fuel Wright Now

Fuel Truck, Dayton International Airport, Dayton, Ohio, USA
We have no idea if this company has any real ties to Orville and Wilbur, but it was cool to see this fuel truck at Dayton International Airport (DAY).

If you're ever in the area, there are several aviation museums nearby and even some cool exhibits in the James M. Cox Dayton International Airport.

Space Shot

Space Shuttle Endeavour, Port Canaveral, Florida, USA
We took this picture with an old point and shoot film camera after finishing a cruise of the Bahamas.

Nowadays, we'd have a tripod, zoom lens, image stabilization, crisp digital resolution, and certainly an HD video.

It's true that the photo doesn't capture the details of the rushing shuttle, the bright flare of the rocket, nor the delayed roaring noise.  However, though time has faded and degraded this photo, we're reminded of the day by this snapshot.

Rustic Pelican

Pelican, Dania Beach, Florida, USA
This pelican was hunting for scraps along the fishing pier at Dania Beach.  We like how rustic this photo is and how unafraid the pelican was.
