Discovering Columbus

Today marks the 521st anniversary of Christopher Columbus' landing in the 'New World'.

The Columbus Monument was erected in 1992 to commemorate the 500th anniversary of his arrival in the Americas.

With all the new thoughts about the aftermath of Columbus, some might wonder why in the birthplace of the most freedom-loving nation on earth there is a monument to a man who inflicted tyranny on native peoples.

Whatever the truth was about Columbus, we leave it to each person to decide.

The Market Street National Bank (now a Residence Inn hotel) is a classic example of Art Deco architecture. The colors, shapes, and typography at the main entrance vividly represent the fanciful Art Deco era.

Philadelphia is known for cheese steaks, hoagies, and pizza. We ate authentic examples of all three at Lorenzo's in Philly's Italian Market neighborhood. This hoagie was delicious!
