A Factory Tan

Sometimes, when we stray off the beaten path, we discover unusual buildings and history.  Such was the case when we found the old Bona Allen Tannery.  This storied company once made saddles for Roy Rogers' horse, Trigger, and was a favorite saddle for the cast of Bonanza.

To get this image, we started with our original color photo and then used Picasa's  Holga-ish filter to render an emulation of a Holga camera photo.

We're Not in Kansas

Mid-Continent International Airport (MCI), Kansas City, Missouri, USA

Despite the name, Kansas City (aka Mid-Continent) International Airport (MCI) is in Missouri, not Kansas. The photo's unusual hue was the result of the windows on this particular Beech 1900D aircraft.

The airport has some very unusual architectural features which made sense to the TWA designers, but are less attractive to and functional for modern travelers.  Nonetheless, it's an historic gem featuring a (mostly) single-level layout of three ringed terminals.

Big Breakfast

Americans love to overeat.  This big breakfast featuring an omelet, potatoes, and an English muffin is no exception.

Artful Flow

This dam once produced electricity, now it produces some beautiful water sculptures.

A few steps downstream from this old dam are the beautiful DeSoto Falls.

Reflecting on Michigan

These boats were quietly awaiting their next jaunt out onto the open water of Lake Michigan.  This protected marina made the water seem almost glassy on a very windy day.

Red E 4 A Show

Red Rocks Amphitheatre, Morrison, Colorado, USA

Long before opera singers and rock stars brought it international fame, this natural amphitheatre was used by native peoples.  We never saw a concert there, but Red Rocks is beautiful and amazing.  During the day, you can find folks at Red Rocks exercising, holding gatherings, checking out the museum, and enjoying the fresh, mountain air and scenery.

United With A Mainliner

Boeing 727 Prototype, Everett, Washington, USA

This is the tail of the first Boeing 727 ever built.  Currently at the Museum of Flight Restoration Center, this prototype ultimately was delivered to United Airlines and carried around 3 million passengers and logged over 48,000 landings.

Beyond the historic nature of this bird, the tail is just so cool to look at in its vintage color scheme.  Being united with this Mainliner really took us back to the Golden Age of Aviation.

Green In Between

The multicolored rocks on the shore of Mackworth Island are teeming with algae.  Even up close, the sun, algae, water, and rocks combine to make a lovely scene.  We love walking in and around the island whenever we're up near Falmouth and Portland.

Mother and Child

Taking pictures into the sun is always hard.  Sometimes, you can't get a good balance of the light or keep the sun from distorting and shooting rays all over the picture.

In this case, it doesn't really matter, as this mother and her child are the real stars here and we delighted in watching them.

Flying Rainbow

We got this beautiful kite at the Into the Wind store in Boulder, Colorado around Thanksgiving.  We had to wait until spring to launch it in the sky.  It was well worth the wait!

Succulent Strawberries

These freshly picked strawberries were incredibly juicy and delicious.  We could have eaten buckets of these!

Florida Rains

Florida is known as the Sunshine State, but it does rain there.  In South Florida, a md-afternoon thunderstorm often comes and is gone in 20-30 minutes.  The day this photo was taken of this Art Deco gem was no exception.

Climbing Above the Clouds

From the ground, we sometimes only see the overcast, gloomy underbellies of clouds. 
One of the wonders of flying is climbing above the clouds and seeing these majestic sky mountains.
