Food or Drug?

Mushroom, Atlanta, Georgia, USA
We found this cute little mushroom growing in our yard a few summers ago. To us, it looks like a mushroom you'd find at the grocery store. To play it safe, however, we decided to leave our little friend growing in the ground.

  1. According to my mushroom field guide (and I'm no expert), this might be an "Abruptly-bulbous Agaricus" (Agaricus abruptibulbous - edible) OR a "Destroying Angel" (Amanita virosa - poisonous). This looks similar to both photos. I love finding and identifying different types of mushrooms and fungi on our various hikes, though I'd never be brave (or, perhaps, foolish) enough to try to pick and eat any. As you wisely chose, they are best left where they are found. :)
