Westward Ho!
Gateway Arch, St Louis, Missouri, USA
The Gateway Arch, also known as the Gateway to the West, was designed in 1947 by architect Eero Saarinen (TWA Flight Center at JFK Airport) and structural engineer Hannskarl Bandel (Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts). Completed in 1965, the arch is an engineering and architectural masterpiece.
The monument is also known as the Gateway to the West because it is near the starting point of the Lewis and Clark Expedition. From 1803 to 1806, Meriwether Lewis and William Clark conducted the first American expedition to the Pacific coast.
