Bye Bye Northwest

Concourse A, Detroit Metropolitan Airport (DTW), Romulus, Michigan, USA
This view of a Northwest Airlines Boeing 747 at Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport (DTW) is (or will soon be) a thing of the past. Following their recent acquisition of Northwest, Delta Airlines has been aggressively repainting the Northwest fleet
. If ever you are in Detroit Metro, we encourage you to visit the McNamara Terminal and see this fountain, the ExpressTram people mover, and the exquisite Light Tunnel.

A View As Rich As A Vanderbilt

Biltmore Estate, Asheville, North Carolina, USA
We visited Asheville and Great Smoky Mountains National Park in February 1999. As you can see, winter is beautiful there and even a little green.

The Real Florida

Wetlands, St. Augustine, Florida, USA
Continuing on our theme of warmer weather, we took this picture on a December day while passing through St Augustine. At one time, almost everywhere in Florida looked like this.

Tropical Paradise

Charlotte Amalie, St Thomas, US Virgin Islands
Winter may still be roaring over much of the Northern Hemisphere, but in this picture it's summer. We took this beautiful view from atop Paradise Point.

Evening Commuters

Expressway and Rail Station, Tel Aviv, Israel
Commuting to and from work is an everyday occurrence for millions around the world. These folks were likely commuting home from a day at the shops, malls, and markets which closed in the evening.

To get this shot, we disabled the flash and set the camera shutter open for a few seconds. We needed the camera shutter open long enough to capture the moving cars, but not so long that the people in the rail station would appear as blurs.

Also, to further reduce blurring, we set the timer to snap the picture a few seconds after we pressed the button. This gave the camera time to settle after the slight movement from pressing the button.

Food or Drug?

Mushroom, Atlanta, Georgia, USA
We found this cute little mushroom growing in our yard a few summers ago. To us, it looks like a mushroom you'd find at the grocery store. To play it safe, however, we decided to leave our little friend growing in the ground.

A Remnant of Highway 27

Perry Motor Lodge Sign, Perry, Florida, USA
When we took this picture of the Perry Motor Lodge sign in 1992, both the lodge and the sign were old and decrepit. We've heard that the sign still stands.

The Perry Motor Lodge stood on U.S. Highway 27, which in the days before the Interstate Highway System carried folks from the midwest to Miami. U.S. Highway 27 is not so busy anymore and threads through many communities whose glory days are long past.

Prickly Sentinels

Cacti, Phoenix, Arizona, USA
You might think that these prickly fellows keep watch on a lonely dessert, but in fact they are in the Desert Botanical Garden inside metropolitan Phoenix.

Huh?

Billboard, Eufala, Alabama, USA
We're not quite sure what criterion Phil uses to determine that his butts are the best, so we'll just take his word for it.

Phil is also offering half-price ice, but we are not curious enough to find out why.

Big Haul

CSX Frieght Train, Cartersville, Georgia, USA
We watched this southbound freight train go through Cartersville's rejuvenated downtown. From the locomotive to the last car, the sites and sounds vary frequently. It must have taken 5 minutes for this train to go through at a pretty good speed.

A half an hour later a northbound train came through, but many of the car types that were full going south were empty going north.

Revolutionary Fare

Baked Schrod, Boston, Massachusetts, USA
We had this yummy schrod at the famous (and deservedly so) Durgin Park restaurant. The Durgin Park name dates from just after the US Civil War, but a restaurant has been in the building since the American Revolution.

Westward Ho!

Gateway Arch, St Louis, Missouri, USA
The Gateway Arch, also known as the Gateway to the West, was designed in 1947 by architect Eero Saarinen (TWA Flight Center at JFK Airport) and structural engineer Hannskarl Bandel (Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts). Completed in 1965, the arch is an engineering and architectural masterpiece.

The monument is also known as the Gateway to the West because it is near the starting point of the Lewis and Clark Expedition. From 1803 to 1806, Meriwether Lewis and William Clark conducted the first American expedition to the Pacific coast.

jetBlue A320, Maho Beach, St Maarten, The Netherlands Antilles
This picture was taken from famous Maho Beach, on the island of Concordia (St Martin/St Maarten), as jetBlue's A320 Viva La Blue was landing at Princess Juliana International Airport (SXM). This airport is considered one of the best and most unique by plane-spotters the around world.

Climbing Clay

Ned climbing a cliff wall, Providence Canyon State Park, Georgia, USA
Here's a 1992 picture of Ned climbing a sloping wall of Georgia red clay at Providence Canyon State Park.

Providence Canyon is sometimes called Georgia's "Little Grand Canyon", but it is not a purely natural feature. The massive canyons (gullies) were caused by erosion due to poor farming in the 1800s.

Buffy Herd Chillin'

Buffalo, Genesee Park, Colorado, USA
These big buffalo were enjoying a recent snowfall at their grazing grounds. Located in the foothills just west of Denver, Genesee Park is bisected by I-70 and it is very convenient to pop off the Interstate and visit with these massive creatures.

Dreaming of the Beach

Lifeguard Stand, Manhattan Beach, California, USA
This is one of our favorite pictures. We took this in the late afternoon of a cold spring day. The beach was not ready for swimming or sunbathing, but surfers and sightseers had plenty to enjoy!

Philadelphian Hoagie

Hoagie, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA
Philadelphia is known for cheese steaks, hoagies, and pizza. We ate authentic examples of all three at Lorenzo's in Philly's Italian Market neighborhood. This hoagie was delicious!

Palacio Real de Madrid

Royal Palace, Madrid, Spain
Palacio Real de Madrid is the official residence of the King of Spain, although King Juan Carlos and the royal family actually reside at smaller palaces in the outskirts of Madrid.

This picture was taken in the afternoon of a cold and wet December day. The light, the wind, and the leftover rain just seem to add to the palace's grandeur.

Hackney Carriages

Cabs for Hire, London, England
Our first cab experience in London was unsettling. We were riding from Victoria Station to our hotel. We and our luggage were all placed in the rear compartment (the back seat and a huge open space) with no seat belts. The driver was in a rush to get us there and get his next fare and our unsecured luggage was rolling and tossing onto us. Thankfully, because of London's wonderful tube system, we did not need to hire a cab again until returning to Victoria Station at the end of our visit.

Unlike our actual ride to our hotel, this picture evokes a relaxed bygone era. When we think of London's black cabs, we usually think of this picture.

Parking Meters as Art

Parking Meters, Prague, Czech Republic
Here are some parking meters as we saw them in Prague on our way up the hill towards the castle. Note how each meter has its own face. Also, the sidewalk tiling is fabulous and unexpected.

Triplets

Triplet Peanut, Georgia, USA
We bring you this peanut in honor of our adopted state of Georgia. We discovered this one in a bag of roasted Georgia peanuts. Maybe finding this peanut in Georgia is like finding a four leaf clover in Ireland.
