Not Open on Succulent Sundays

Original Chick-fil-A Restaurant, Hapeville, Georgia, USA
Chick-fil-A is a fixture in the Southern USA. The Dwarf House is the pre-cursor to all Chick-fil-A restaurants. Unlike regular Chick-fil-A's, the Dwarf House has a larger menu and also serves beef! The owner is a religious Christian, so all Chick-fil-A's are closed on Sunday. While we may not agree with all of the owner's views, it is nice to know that Chick-fil-A puts family and faith before profit.

No Monkeying Around

Appetizers, Kfar Saba, Israel
This cornucopia of monkey dishes shows how serious this restaurant is about pleasing guests. The fourteen condiments and appetizers shown do not even account for all of the complimentary food served before our main meal (kabobs of meat) arrived. We're not sure if the Achla restaurant is still in business, but we can report that every one of these dishes (and our main course) were delicious!

Fine Wine?

Mizrach Wine, Hutchinson Island, Florida, USA
Marc found this bottle in the liquor cabinet while preparing for Pesach 5754 (Passover 1994). This bottle was being kept for a special occasion. As the label clearly shows that it was imported from Palestine, the wine had been bottled in 1948 or earlier.

Through the birth of children, Bar and Bat Mitzvot, weddings, and other celebrations, this bottle sat waiting to be found. Finally discovered again, it was thought that the family could celebrate the naming of Marc's niece with this wine. After uncorking the bottle, we all felt better admiring the wine instead of drinking it. So while we didn't drink from bottle, its discovery still brought the intended joy to the celebration.

International Travelers

Marc and Ned, Atlanta, Georgia, USA
Sometimes we see something goofy which is too cool to pass up. This Delta sign was laying on the ground just outside Atlanta Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport (ATL). If we weren't honest, we could have easily have stuck it in our friends' SUV and kept it as a special souvenir. Instead, we just grabbed it, got a picture with it, and put it back down where we found it. Even though we didn't get to keep the sign, we enjoyed getting this goofy picture with it!

Bills for Biscuits?

Dog and Lady at the Bank, Tel Aviv, Israel
Going to the bank is a routine thing most of us do at one time or another. It was unusual for us to see a dog at the bank, especially one as large as the one above.

Make Ours Quintuples

Beer Samplers, Morgan Street Brewery, St. Louis, Missouri, USA
After touring the famous Arch on a hot summer day, we enjoyed lunch outdoors with a bunch of cold beers. Although St. Louis is the home of Anheuser-Busch, we decided to enjoy these refreshing local micro-brews instead.

A Signature Building

John Hancock Building, Chicago, Illinois, USA
The juxtaposition of these structures was captured by laying down in a church courtyard across the street from the John Hancock building.

99.9

Old Gulf Gas Pump, South Georgia, USA
We saw this retired gas pump while wandering through South Georgia one spring day back in 1996. By then the price of gasoline had almost certainly climbed above 99.9 cents per gallon, and this pump was not designed to handle that! Today, the Gulf brand is no longer served in fueling stations. Instead, Gulf has become BP and BP now sells Amoco branded fuels.

Hoo Are You?

Owl, Highlands, North Carolina, USA
This little fellow was just hanging out on a branch near Highlands. To get this shot, we used our built-in zoom lens because he was high up and so as not to scare the fellow off.

Frigid Fenokee

Okefenokee Swamp, Georgia, USA
One normally thinks of swamps as hot and muggy, but on this particular day in 1996, it snowed at the Okefenokee! We enjoyed our tour, but it was quite a cold boat ride! The cold weather doesn't usually last too long, as is evidenced by the greenery and Spanish moss.

Yard Guard

Ortho Max Display, Atlanta, Georgia, USA
While out shopping for some lawn maintenance products, we came across this display for fire ant killer. Tacky displays are a common way to grab your attention. While we didn't buy any fire ant killer, we certainly did stop to look at the giant ant.

Just Like Italy

Hosteria Romana Food Display, Miami Beach, Florida, USA
We saw this lovely display at the Hosteria Romana Italian restaurant on Miami Beach. The funny thing is, we saw it after we ate there. Lovingly run by an Italian family, the restaurant had great atmosphere and the food and staff were amazing. Not too fancy nor too simple. Just right.

Marc had a delicious Caesar salad with anchovies followed by fresh pasta seasoned simply with olive oil and fresh garlic. Ned had a homemade mojito (this was Miami Beach of course) complete with a huge piece of sugar cane, a delicious salad, and a fresh pasta with a rich sauce and imported cheeses. The freshly baked bread was amazing as well.

Located on a cute stretch of Espanola Way on Miami Beach, Hosteria Romana is the real deal!

LGB no T

Long Beach Airport (LGB) Entrance, Long Beach California, USA

Long Beach Airport (LGB) Entrance (side view), Long Beach California, USA
The Streamline Moderne (Art Deco) terminal of Long Beach Airport (LGB), also known as Daugherty Field, is a national historic landmark. Built in 1941, most of the airport terminal (inside and out) appears as it has for many decades. Even the restaurant is a throwback to a gentler age of air travel and includes a viewing platform to watch airliner movements to and from the terminal.

Thamer Than the Tower

Tower Bridge, London, England
Unlike the nearby Tower of London, the Tower Bridge houses no torture chambers, just a museum and bridge equipment.

Octopus and Squid

Cloud Formations, Haifa, IsraelWhen we saw these clouds, we immediately thought of an octopus and squid swimming in the sea. An everyday part of life in most places, clouds are so much fun to stare at to discover hidden images!

Homemade Doughnuts

Uncooked Doughnuts, Atlanta, Georgia, USA
Every year we make sufganyot (Hebrew for doughnuts) at Chanukah. If we have a party, our friends and their kids help us make and eat these! This is, of course, a huge hit with the kids.

Once the dough is rolled, our secret is to use a shot glass and a chopstick to make each doughnut. These fry up in under 60 seconds and are then ready to be rolled in sugar and eaten!

Snazzy Plaza

SunTrust Plaza Building, Atlanta, Georgia, USA
Here is a photo from the first floor of the SunTrust Plaza building in Downtown Atlanta. It may appear that everything is collapsing but this view is from the floor looking up diagonally. There is a spiral staircase, a faux blind, a sculpture, and a decorated ceiling. Needless to say, its an interesting and dynamic building built in 1992.
