Canard by the Catamarans

Duck Breast and Fixings, Marigot, Saint-Martin, France
We enjoyed this delicious meal while sitting outside at the Marina Port la Royale in Marigot.  The meal, environment, weather, and service were all perfect!

Saint-Martin is a French territory in the Caribbean Sea which is closer to Cuba than France.

Artistic Break

Breakwater, Kahului, Hawaii
These massive concrete objects make up a section of a breakwater for Kahului Harbor.  The various objects resemble toys, rail lines, dumbbells, and other common things to turn this protective barrier into a work of art.

Not only do planes float at the Vancouver Harbour Water Airport (CXH/CYHC), aka
the Vancouver Coal Harbour Seaplane Base, but the petrol station does too!

Going Underground

Tunnel, Madrid, Spain
This road and tunnel are located near the site where the Inquisition began in Spain.

While likely unintentional, the arrow in the street can be seen as a metaphor for the Jewish Conversos (aka Marranos) who remained in Spain after 1492.  To remain in Spain, these Jews assumed Christian identities, but did their best to remain Jewish secretly.

The Spanish Inquisition lasted over 350 years (from 1478 to 1834) and it wasn't until 1968 that the decree expelling Jews was rescinded.

Hawaii Frond-O

'Ama'u Fern, Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, Hawaii

This unusual fern is native to Hawaii and most commonly found in and around Hawaii Volcanoes National Park.

We struggled to come up with a cool title for this close up of a beautiful
'Ama'u fern frond, so we just went with the cheesiest thing that came to mind.

Watson Observation

Sunset and Dodge Island, Miami, Florida, USA
We saw this beautiful sunset from Watson Island while watching cruise ships sail by.

Watson Island is in Biscayne Bay and is accessible via the MacArthur Causeway, which connects Miami and Miami Beach.

Dodge Island, which is across the way from Watson Island, contains the worlds largest cruise ship port.

the atl?

Atlanta, Georgia, USA
This is what Atlanta looked like back in the summer of 1990.  It was smaller back then, perhaps it was just the atl instead of The ATL.

Water Spider

Fountain, Charleston, South Carolina, USA
This fountain is unusual in that the water is jetted from the outside in, rather than the inside out.  Next time you're in Charleston, check out Waterfront Park for this fountain and some nice views of Charleston Harbor.

Trashing Trash

Litter, Lihue, Hawaii
It is always sad to see litter, but it is good to see that this discarded can is being pulverized by motor traffic and bleached and corroded by the salt water and sun.

Instant Brunch

Chicken and Waffles, Atlanta, Georgia, USA
Fried chicken and waffles is a popular dish in the Southern United States.  Covered in syrup and powdered sugar, we got this delicious basket from a food truck.  This dish was more unconventional than the usual pairing because the chicken and waffles were combined under the syrup and because the chicken was boneless.

Somewhere in the Middle of the Nowhere

Pottery Gallery, Chattahoochee National Forest, Georgia, USA
While aimlessly roaming the back roads of North Georgia, we discovered the Mark of the Potter gallery along the Soquee River.  The gallery is large and sits atop an old mill.  Here is their relaxing back porch overlooking the river where we could watch the water and feed the trout.  Despite the remoteness, the gallery has been in the same spot for over four decades and is worth a look next time you're on Georgia Highway 197.

Faded Glory

Kodak Store, Atlanta, Georgia, USA

At one time, Kokak was the biggest name in photography.  It was well known for its cameras and especially its film.  Every tourist attraction, newsstand, department store, pharmacy, and grocery had Kodak film roll stands.  Kodak's downfall was digital photography, which it ironically helped to invent.  Now, the name is fading into obscurity, just like this building.

Decked Out in Deco

Market Street National Bank Building, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA
The Market Street National Bank (now a Residence Inn hotel) is a classic example of Art Deco architecture. The colors, shapes, and typography at the main entrance vividly represent the fanciful Art Deco era.

Some Chowda

Fish Chowder, Freeport, Maine, USA
This delicious bowl of fish chowder (clam and haddock) was full-bodied with plenty of clams and fish and came with a savory homemade dill roll. These rolls were so unique that we brought back a half-dozen with us for later!  If we could have brought home the chowder on the plane, we would have done that too.
